If asked whether there's life on Mars, many people will say no, right? The atmosphere of Mars is thin when compared to Earth's, and the main element is carbon dioxide. Furthermore, in a report published by Nature Geoscience, its stated that there is a sufficient amount of oxygen in Mars' underground.
It's possible to think that there may be a salt water lake in Mars' underground. And it's especially likely to be located under the ice caps of a polar region of Mars. On the other hand, the rover “Curiosity” that explored Mars in 2016, found an oxidised stratum indicating that Mars has an atmosphere rich in oxygen similar to Earth. With the loss of Mars’ magnetic field, although a lot of Mars’ oxygen was released into space, this discovery shows that there could still be oxygen stored underground.
The research team of NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), from these two circumstantial evidences, studied how much oxygen is left in the underground salt water lake which is supposed to be buried near the polar caps. And in particular they concluded that the polar caps contain enough oxygen to support life. The amount of oxygen in the atmosphere should increase, especially in polar regions where the temperature is low, and it's highly probable that it's melting into the salt water lake.
If a good amount of oxygen is dissolved in the salt water similar to the oceans of the earth, for example, the possibility that microorganisms can exist there will be considerably increased.
However, this study had many cautionary points and unexplained points of interest still left unanswered. After all, the situation regarding the underground salt water lake itself is still not confirmed is a possibility of actually existing. Nonetheless, the research is an important indicator to show how "life can exist on Mars". The information also suggests the possibility that life can exist there without accompanying photosynthesis.
